While most were enjoying a well-earned winter break, our dedicated wrestlers were hard at work on the mats. The After Schools Programme recently hosted an intensive training camp that saw Rooties Givanno Beukes and Runge van der Merwe pushing their limits alongside top young talent.

After the camp, Givanno went on to represent Roots at the SADC National Open Wrestling Championship in Windhoek, where he proudly brought home two bronze medals for Namibia and the school! Unfortunately, fellow wrestler Runge sustained a broken arm during training. However, as he was entered for the competition, and the only one in his weight category, he too received medals in the freestyle category. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.

There’s more to celebrate! Givanno, along with teammates Altus Wiesner and Friedrich Simon, has been selected to represent the Roots Wrestling Club and the Namibian Wrestling Federation as part of the Onghoshis Team at the upcoming Johnnie Reitz Tournament in Pretoria this weekend, 2 August 2025. We are beyond proud of these Rooties and will be cheering them on from home!

Earlier this year, Altus Wiesner proved that determination pays off when he competed in the Abraham Geldenhuys Wrestling Tournament in Cape Town. Despite it being his first-ever tournament in RSA, Altus delivered an outstanding performance and proudly brought home the gold!

We’re also excited to announce new achievements off the mat: Congratulations to Rootie parent Lihandra van der Merwe, who recently qualified as a Level 1 wrestling referee! A big shout-out to Coach Alex, who successfully completed his Level 2 referee qualification. He is also at Level 3 in coaching. This is a huge step forward for wrestling at Roots Gymnasium.

Upcoming Wrestling Dates:

  • 30 August 2025: Roots Wrestling Tournament at Roots Gymnasium

13 September 2025: NWF National Championships in Windhoek

The wrestling season is heating up, and we can't wait to see our Rooties take the mat again. They are stronger, sharper, and more determined than ever!
