High School

Grades 8 - 12

We follow the international Cambridge Curriculum, a curriculum followed by over 10,000 schools in over 160 countries, also being one of the few schools within Namibia following this curriculum.

Grade 8 is a foundation year where students are exposed to as many subjects as possible so that they can make an informed decision when it comes to subject choices in Grade 9.

In Grade 9 we start with the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) where subjects are structured in such a way that it is holistic. Students are exposed to commerce, the Arts, to humanities, the sciences, mathematics, and languages.

IGCSE is a 2-year course, where students complete an International Cambridge exam at the end of Grade 10.

We do not view IGCSE as an exit year. Students continue to Grade 11 with the Advanced Subsidiary Levels (AS-Levels), also through Cambridge. AS-Levels are generally seen as a 1-year course, but at Roots Gymnasium, it is offered over 2 years. We believe that this gives our students the best chance at success. For the students who are gifted and talented, and who want to complete the full Advance Levels (A-Levels), there is the option to complete the AS-Levels in Grade 11, followed by the A-Levels in Grade 12.

In Grade 12, our students write an International Exam. AS-Levels are equivalent to Grade 12 (otherwise known as Matric) and students can proceed to university with such a qualification.

A-Levels (acknowledged as a pre-university year) usually gives students who want to study abroad the best possible chance to do so.

At Roots, our approach is holistic, our standard is high, and we truly believe that by following this curriculum, we instil skills that set our students up for success in life after school.
