“It all came together so perfectly, nothing felt out of place. It was vibrant and alive, pure bliss to watch. I’m so proud of everyone who made it happen, and honestly, I wish more people could have seen this Broadway-worthy performance,” said Miss Ciska Koekermoer, one of our teachers and directors.
Emotional performances kept the crowd mesmerised.
Can you believe it? Our school had its very first musical concert! Mamma Mia was held on the 27th and 28th of August 2025, and if I could describe it in one word, it would be AMAZING. After three months of preparation, around 50 student performers brought the story to life, and the two-night event welcomed approximately 250 audience members.
The Roots Gymnasium Clubhouse was packed with people from families, teachers, grandparents, to students. Upon entering, you were immediately transported to the Greek island of Kalokairi. You could tell this night was going to be special. The effort put into the show was huge, with total expenses of about N$40,000, but the performance also raised around N$11,000 in profit, proving all the hard work truly paid off.
The Rooted Band opened the concert with a song and had everyone hooked from the very start. All around, excited faces filled the room. Parents looked proud, and the lively tunes had the little ones bouncing in their seats. The atmosphere was warm, cheerful, and full of energy.

From what I’ve heard, performing on stage felt magical. When the lights hit, you couldn’t even see the crowd anymore. It was just you, your castmates, and the story. One of the cast members, Talita Pretorius, described it perfectly: “At first I was nervous, full of adrenaline, but the moment I stepped on stage, that all faded away. I just became part of the act. In the end, it was fun and so rewarding, knowing that all the effort and hard work paid off, left me with an amazing feeling of satisfaction.”
Bianca van Rhyn (Lead Understudy) and Amelie Meyer (Lead), who both played the part of Lente Vermaak.
And the crowd made it even better. They clapped, laughed, and cheered so much that it pushed us to give it our all. During the break, the sunset was painted a deep orange across the horizon. It felt like even the sky was joining in the celebration with us.
The feedback after the show was overwhelmingly positive. One person couldn’t help but say, “It was Mamma Mi-swome!” Everyone praised the hard work and said how well-organised it was. The last scene, when we sang 'Thank You for the Music' and 'Mamma Mia' (my personal favourites), felt like the perfect finale. It was like watching the end credits roll of a movie, where everything came together beautifully.
This was our first musical concert, but trust me, it won’t be the last. Roots gymnasium shone bright on those two nights, and we can’t wait to see what comes next!
